This Week: Health Care; Honoring Jesse Jackson; Promoting Small Business Development

Last Saturday, nearly 200 people attended my town hall meeting on federal funding held at The Links at Whitehaven. The Ninth District has received over $340 million in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) since it was signed into law by President Obama in February.  Federal funding has been used to retain teachers and maintain special education programs in the Memphis and Shelby County schools, hire 37 new Memphis police officers, and help MATA purchase new busses.  Tens of millions of dollars are being used for road construction projects that will create new economic development opportunities and jobs.

This Week: Veterans Day, Health Care Reform, Federal Funding, Town Hall Meeting

On Wednesday, more than 300 local veterans attended a meeting that I hosted to honor their military service. I was pleased that Mid-South VA Director, John Dandridge, and Marlin Angell, the Acting Director of the Memphis VA Medical Center could join us and hear directly from our local veterans.  Some veterans spoke about the difficulties of obtaining their benefits, some talked about the lack of services for female veterans, and some talked about the need for greater mental health care for a loved one experiencing Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

This Week: Health Care, Credit Card Reforms, Unemployment, Save the Date!

With a vote expected this weekend on H.R. 3692, the Affordable Health Care for America Act, I wanted to share the latest information on the bill.  The final vote on the bill could come as early as 6 p.m. on Saturday night – there is also a slight chance that we may be voting on this measure Sunday.

On Saturday, I participated in Shelby County Commissioner Henri Brooks' Second Annual Faith-Based Community Know Your Government Day that was held at LeMoyne-Owen College.   In the morning, I introduced Ms. Acacia Bamberg Salatti, Deputy Director of the Center for Faith Based and Neighborhood Partnerships at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services who spoke on how to increase community partnership with faith-based organizations.  Later that afternoon, I was part of a panel discussion on federal funding for the Ninth District.

On Saturday night, I received the Politician of the Year Award at the Stone Awards for the second year in a row – and Willie “Hank” Henry of my Memphis staff was honored with the 2009 Most Outstanding Counselor.
