This Week: Health Care; Honoring Jesse Jackson; Promoting Small Business Development |

Last Saturday, nearly 200 people attended my town hall meeting on federal
funding held at The Links at Whitehaven. The Ninth District has received
over $340 million in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act
(ARRA) since it was signed into law by President Obama in February. Federal
funding has been used to retain teachers and maintain special education programs
in the Memphis and Shelby County schools, hire 37 new Memphis police officers,
and help MATA purchase new busses. Tens of millions of dollars are being used
for road construction projects that will create new economic development
opportunities and jobs.

Center could join us and hear directly from our local veterans. Some veterans
spoke about the difficulties of obtaining their benefits, some talked about the
lack of services for female veterans, and some talked about the need for greater
mental health care for a loved one experiencing Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Deputy Director of the Center for Faith Based and Neighborhood Partnerships at
the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services who spoke on how to increase
community partnership with faith-based organizations. Later that afternoon, I
was part of a panel discussion on federal
funding for the Ninth District.
