Dear friend,

This week, the House unanimously voted to honor the Foot Soldiers of the Selma Marches with a Congressional Gold Medal, I cosponsored the Voting Rights Amendment Act with Congressman John Conyers, I spoke about Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s planned speech to Congress on MSNBC, and Memphis lost two of its treasures in Dr. John Shea and Zeke Logan. And there are just 2 days left to enroll in a health insurance plan at HealthCare.gov.

Keep reading to learn more about what happened this week, or if you’d like to receive the updates in this eNewsletter (and more) as they happen simply “like” my Facebook page. Be sure to check it regularly, as it will be updated often with news, pictures, and videos!

The HealthCare.gov insurance marketplace closes on Sunday, just 2 days from now! You can visit https://bit.ly/hcSavings to see if you qualify for tax credits that will be applied as discounts on your monthly insurance premium. Read more about this year’s health insurance enrollment period here.

Honoring the Foot Soldiers of the 1965 Selma Marches

On Wednesday, the House voted unanimously to honor the Foot Soldiers from Bloody Sunday, Turnaround Tuesday and the march from Selma to Montgomery with a Congressional Gold Medal. They were Americans of all races who saw injustice and came together to right it. Each risked their lives; some lost them. Watch my full statement regarding the vote here.

Fighting to Restore Voting Rights Protections

In the same week that we voted to honor the Selma March Foot Soldiers I also joined my friend, Congressman John Conyers, in cosponsoring the Voting Rights Amendment Act of 2015. Read more about this important civil rights legislation here.

Remembering Zeke Logan and Dr. John Shea

Memphis lost two treasures this week: Dr. John Shea and radio star Zeke Logan. Dr. John Shea Jr. was a pioneer in the field of otology and a legendary doctor in Memphis who helped usher in a new era of treatment. Read my statement commemorating his life here. Zeke Logan was funny, friendly, and down-to-earth. I was sorry to learn of his passing and send my condolences to his family and loved ones. Read my full statement regarding his passing here.

Improving Public Housing in Memphis

$6.7 million in new federal funding from U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development that I announced last night will help upgrade and repair public housing in Memphis. Learn more about the fundinghere.

Holding Police Accountable for Excessive Force

FBI Director James Comey was exactly right when he said yesterday that it is "ridiculous" that we can’t tell the American people how many lives were ended by police officers this year, or any year. That is why I introduced the National Statistics on Deadly Force Act, which you can read more about here.

Supporting the President and our Relationship with Israel

On Monday evening, I spoke with MSNBC’s Chris Hayes last night about Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s planned speech to Congress last night. Speaker Boehner should not have undermined President Obama role as the leader of our nation’s foreign policy by scheduling this speech so close to the Israeli elections, which I believe will ultimately hurt Israel. I hope Speaker Boehner considers rescheduling this speech. You can watch my interview on MSNBC’s All In with Chris Hayes here.

Fighting for Children like Late Memphian Chloe Grauer

A non-psychoactive, medicinal marijuana oil known as CBD could have helped ease the suffering of 3-year-old Chloe Grauer, but she wasn't able to receive the treatment because of our outdated drug policies. On Tuesday, I spoke with Seema Iyer on MSNBC’s Shift to talk about a bill I have cosponsored that could help children like Chloe access potentially lifesaving treatments like CBD. Watch my interview here.

Getting Memphians Bigger Tax Returns

The Earned Income Tax Credit adds an average of $2,400 to qualifying tax refunds and is too important for people to overlook. I hope all citizens of the Ninth District take advantage of credit if they are eligible for it. More information can be found here.

Helping Get Memphians Out of Traffic

The piecemeal, short-term approach to infrastructure funding that Congress has taken over the last several years forced the Tennessee Department of Transportation to delay more than $66 million in road improvement and construction projects in Shelby County that could help reduce traffic around Memphis. Read what Congress should do to fix it here.

Protecting our Environment

The State Department hasn't even finished its study of the Keystone XL Pipeline, which we should see before bringing the pipeline to the floor for a vote. I am disappointed that House Republicans broke from regular order to rush through a vote on it this afternoon. Watch my speech on the House floor regarding this vote here.

Stopping Taxpayer Funded Animal Abuse

For years, the Meat Animal Research Center (MARC) in Nebraska has been operated at taxpayer expense for the purpose of increasing production and profits for the meat industry, benefits that have been questionable at best, even by many within the meat industry. Learn more about what I’m doing to stop it here.

Help Bring First Lady Michelle Obama to Memphis!

First Lady Michelle Obama has launched the #ReachHigher competition to raise awareness and get more high school seniors to fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which can help families afford college, and she will speak at the winner’s high school commencement ceremony. Learn more about the competition here.

As always, I remain.
Most sincerely,
