Congressman Cohen Condemns Trump Administration Decision Allowing Tennessee to Block Grant Medicaid

January 8, 2021

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today condemned the Trump Administration's decision to allow Tennessee to operate its Medicaid program through a block grant, jeopardizing health care coverage for residents covered by the state's version of Medicaid known as TennCare. Congressman Cohen has been a harsh critic of the state's plan to use a block grant to fund TennCare and has written both state and federal officials to voice his strong opposition to the proposal.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

"In the aftermath of the violence Trump instigated on Wednesday, his Administration continues to inflict as much structural harm as possible before President-Elect Biden is sworn in on January 20. Approving this block grant is unequivocally the wrong decision for Tennesseans who are already struggling to cope with the ongoing public health crisis. I am hopeful that the Biden Administration will swiftly reverse this decision and protect those who rely on TennCare to meet their most basic needs."
