Cohen Announces More Than $1.2 Million in New Federal Funds for LeMoyne-Owen College

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced the U.S. Department of Education has awarded $1,252,908 to LeMoyne-Owen College under the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Program. The college will be using the funds for academic and capital support.

“LeMoyne-Owen College has a long history of educating Memphis’ best and brightest,” said Congressman Cohen. “These new federal funds will help the college expand and provide more services to their students so they will be better prepared for their future careers.”

The purpose of the HBCU Program is to provide financial assistance to establish or strengthen the academic resources, financial management, endowments and physical plants of historically Black colleges and universities.

Program services include: (1) purchase, rental, or lease of scientific or laboratory equipment; (2) construction, maintenance, renovation, and improvement; (3) support of faculty exchanges, development, and fellowships to assist with attaining advanced degrees; (4) academic instructions; (5) purchase of library books, periodicals, and other educational materials; (6) tutoring, counseling, and student services designed to improve academic success; (7) funds and administrative management and acquisition of equipment used to strengthen funds management; (8) joint use of facilities, such as laboratories and libraries; (9) establishing or improving a development office to strengthen or improve contributions; (10) establishing or enhancing a program of teacher education; (11) establishing community outreach programs designed to develop skills and interest in pursuing a postsecondary education; and (12) other activities that contribute to carrying out the purpose of the Title III-B programs.
