June 18, 2012

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that Buckman International – based in Memphis, TN – has been awarded a Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

“Buckman International has long been respected for its efforts to help protect our environment while also doing its best to create jobs in the Memphis region,” said Congressman Cohen. “The Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award is a prestigious recognition that should be a goal for all chemical companies.”

The Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge was established in 1996 to recognize and promote innovative chemical technologies that prevent pollution and have broad applicability in industry. The Challenge is sponsored by the Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention in partnership with the American Chemical Society Green Chemistry Institute and other members of the chemical community.

This award from the EPA recognized Buckman International’s Maximyze ® technology which is being used across the country and around the world, allowing paper manufacturers to improve the strength and quality of paper, while at the same time reducing the weight and increasing the use of recycled materials and plantation grown wood. Buckman International also received a Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award in 2004 for their Optimyze ® Enzyme Technology to improve paper recycling.
