Cohen Commemorates 47th Anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Assassination

April 3, 2015

[MEMPHIS, TN] – With the 47th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., occurring tomorrow, Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) issued the following statement to commemorate the life and work of the late Reverend:

“47 years ago, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was assassinated in Memphis,” said Congressman Cohen. “While our Memphis community treats this day as a day of remembrance, the rest of the nation does not; it should. Dr. King was an American hero whose dream was not just for civil rights and social justice, but for economic justice as well. He inspired a movement that changed our country for the better. Sadly when it comes to issues like eliminating poverty and protecting the rights of Americans to vote or workers to organize, Dr. King's dream is still just that: a dream. But many of us share that dream, and each day that passes is another day closer to its fulfillment. I hope that day comes soon, and I will continue fighting for what is right in Congress.”

In addition to his written statement commemorating Dr. King’s life and work, Congressman Cohen will deliver remarks tomorrow morning at approximately 11:15AM CT at the “Heartache to Harmony” tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., being held at the National Civil Rights Museum. The Congressman will also deliver welcoming remarks at the April 4th Foundation’s 15th Annual Commemorative Awards Banquet tomorrow evening. The banquet begins at 6:30 PM at the Memphis Hilton (939 Ridgelake Boulevard).
