Cohen Joins Denham and TV Host Laura Nativo in Support of Bipartisan Legislation to Allow Families to Travel on Amtrak With Their Pets

November 20, 2013

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today spoke in support of H.R. 2066, the Pets on Trains Act of 2013, at a press conference held in front of Washington’s Union Station. He was joined at the press conference by Congressmen Jeff Denham (CA-10) and Michael Grimm (NY-11), as well as dog trainer and television personality Laura Nativo. The Pets on Trains Act, which Congressmen Cohen and Denham introduced together in May, would allow families and passengers to travel with domesticated cats and dogs on certain Amtrak trains.

“Those of us lucky enough to have pets are greatly blessed with their companionship,” said Congressman Cohen. “When travelling on Amtrak, families should be able to bring their pets along. Our bill would establish a pet policy on Amtrak trains so pets – which are a part of the family – won’t be left at home to fend for themselves this holiday season.”

“Almost half of American families own a cat or dog, and millions of them will be visiting friends and family this holiday season,” said Congressman Denham.“Pets on Trains would allow those families traveling with pets to choose Amtrak, generating much-needed revenue for the rail provider and saving time and money for pet owners. As a pet owner, I know firsthand how being able to bring our French bulldog, Lily, aboard a train would simplify our travel planning.”

Current Amtrak policy does not permit pets on trains or Thruway services, in passenger areas of train stations or in checked baggage, with the exception of specially-trained service animals for the benefit of a person with a disability.
