Cohen Statement on Passing of Congressman Donald Payne

March 6, 2012

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today issued the following statement on the passing of Congressman Donald Payne (D-NJ-10):

“I had the pleasure and honor of being Congressman Donald Payne’s colleague and friend and worked with him on a wide variety of issues including education and human rights. Last year, I travelled with Congressman Payne to Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo to investigate early childhood and women’s issues. Congressman Payne was an expert on the political, economic, and security situation throughout the continent of Africa and it was my privilege to spend those days in the company of such a knowledgeable and dedicated public servant.

Congressman Payne’s compassion never waned. He felt a duty to those less fortunate and recognized that those suffering people were not a ‘cause’ but individual human beings, deserving of respect. Congressman Payne also did great work with the Congressional Black Caucus, having previously served as Chairman of the distinguished Caucus. New Jersey and our country have lost an amazing public servant, humanitarian and human being. My thoughts and prayers are with Congressman Payne’s family, friends, staff and constituents.”
