November 3, 2015

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), the Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice, this evening renewed his call for a federal investigation into the Darrius Stewart case. In a letter to U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch, the Congressman requested the Department of Justice to open a federal civil rights investigation immediately. A copy of Congressman Cohen’s letter to Attorney General Lynch can be found here.

“I respectfully urge the Department of Justice to open an investigation immediately,” said Congressman Cohen. “We need to know whether any federal civil rights laws have been violated, and only the federal government has the resources, expertise and independence to give this matter the full, fair and public review it deserves.”

Congressman Cohen initially asked the Department of Justice to investigate the Darrius Stewart case in July. A copy of Congressman Cohen’s July letter to the Department of Justice can be found here. A copy of the Department of Justice’s October 16, 2015 response can be found here.
