Cohen Announces $4 Million Research Grant for the University of Memphis

September 14, 2016

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced the University of Memphis has been awarded a $4,000,000 grant from the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Advanced Cyberinfrastructure Division for research of high-frequency mobile sensor data with an emphasis on health data collection.

“Our students at the University of Memphis are a great resource for both our city and our country,” said Congressman Cohen. “This grant will help make research opportunities available that provide real-world, hands-on experience and pave the way for ground-breaking research on health data collection. I am pleased to see the continued federal investment in the University of Memphis.”

Mobile sensors (embedded in phones, vehicles, wearables, and the environment) continuously capture data in great detail, and have the potential to address problems in a range of scientific and engineering domains. This grant project focuses upon a specific case -- health data -- that builds upon several capabilities developed in National Institutes of Health (NIH) sponsored projects for assembling and analyzing health data collected through mobile sensors and apps.
