Cohen Announces Over $1.4 Million to Help Memphians Get Health Insurance Coverage
[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that Seedco has been awarded $1,407,172 in new federal funding to continue efforts to provide in-person assistance to Memphis-area residents shopping for and enrolling in health insurance plans through the Affordable Care Act’s insurance marketplace this fall. This funding comes through the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ Navigator grant program.
“Seedco’s Navigators are an important resource to help Memphis consumers understand their coverage options in the Marketplace,” said Congressman Cohen. “This funding will help them get more Memphians enrolled in high-quality, affordable health insurance plans and help us achieve the goals of President Obama’s landmark Affordable Care Act.”
Seedco received similar funding last year, also through the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, to launch its Navigator program which provides unbiased information to consumers about the Health Insurance Marketplaces, qualified health plans, and public programs such as Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program. The funding being announced today will help Seedco expand the capacity of its extensive network of more than 400 affiliates, add new organizations and referral sources, and ensure both broad and deep coverage of target communities.
Seedco’s Navigators will also be trained on adhering to strict security and privacy standards – including how to safeguard a consumer’s personal information – and will be required to meet these standards. They will be subject to federal criminal penalties for violations of privacy and fraud statutes, on top of any relevant state law penalties. Seedco is a national organization with its Mid-South office based in Memphis that helps low-income households and communities move toward economic prosperity.
