The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded a new grant in the amount of $330,309 to Dr. Anjaparavanda P. Naren, an Associate Professor in the UT Department of Physiology, for diabetes, endocrinology and metabolic research.
Finally, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded Dr. Suleiman W. Bahouth, a Professor in the Department of Pharmacology, a new grant worth $367,500 for research related to heart and vascular disease.
Congressman Cohen stated, “Each of these grants is a new award for FY 2009, so this is money that was not appropriated for the 9th District last year. Securing federal funding for the thriving biomedical research industry in our community is a major priority this year, so I applaud HHS for continuing to recognize the quality work conducted at the UT-HSC in Memphis. The UT Health Science Center is a top notch research hospital and I am proud that these doctors are laying the groundwork for more scientific innovation and medical breakthroughs to come through the 9th District.”
