Congressman Cohen Announces $13.26 Million in Recovery Funds for Memphis Housing Authority
“These monies provide a long overdue investment in the rehabilitation of public housing properties in Memphis and Shelby County,” said Congressman Cohen. “This is another example of the recovery plan working for the people of the 9th District and infusing our community with much-needed capital. I was proud to vote for the ARRA and I am confident that this funding will create jobs and greatly improve the conditions of our public housing.”
In recognition of the need to provide rapid relief to many who are affected by the current economic crisis facing the country, HUD is awarding $2.985 billion in Capital Funds to public housing authorities (PHAs) participating in the public housing program throughout the nation. This funding can be expected to result in providing employment for thousands of construction workers. Additionally, this funding can be expected to substantially modernize tens of thousands of public housing units. HUD moved with unprecedented speed to make Capital Funding available to PHAs within five weeks of enactment of the ARRA. PHAs are to give priority to projects that are ready to begin construction rapidly. PHAs are also to prioritize construction that will increase energy efficiency and lower the long term costs of operating public housing.
“President Obama has given us the mandate to put this money to work quickly so it can make a real difference in the lives of Americans,” said HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan. “HUD is working overtime to get this money to our housing authorities so they can repair and produce critically needed affordable housing, create jobs, and improve the quality of life for their residents.”
