Congressman Cohen Announces $1.56 Million for Prevention Programs for Drug and Alcohol Abuse
“CAAP, Inc. has provided excellent behavioral health services in the 9th District for almost 20 years, and I am very grateful that HUD has appropriated this grant to assist them in their mission,” said Congressman Cohen. “Alcohol and drug abuse destroys families and is one of the major health issues of our time, and we need more organizations like CAAP, Inc. that focus on rehabilitating their clients and helping them to turn their lives around – no matter their level of income.”
CAAP, Inc. was established January 15, 1989, as a non-profit 501(c)(3) program providing counseling services for drug and alcohol dependent individuals on an outpatient basis. Now operating in five locations within the inner city of Memphis, CAAP, Inc. assists over 1,000 individuals annually in overcoming chemical dependency, homelessness, domestic violence victimization, and other self-defeating behavioral health issues. CAAP, Inc. specializes in what they call the "total repair" of clients – often individuals who are destroyed emotionally, spiritually and physically bankrupt with chemical dependency problems, with criminal records and without a home. The “total repair” program successfully helps them to re-establish their lives and family, to obtain employment and to effectively re-enter into the mainstream of community living.
“CAAP, Inc. is unique in that it provides services that address the immediate needs of its clients in conjunction with programs that concentrate on their long-term needs for a successful transition back into society,” added Congressman Cohen. “These monies were needed for CAAP, Inc. to continue to deliver high-quality services and effective programs to their clients in Memphis and Shelby County.”
