Congressman Cohen Announces $2.2 Million for St. Jude
“I congratulate Dr. Boyett and the PBTC on this award,” said Congressman Cohen. “Dr. Boyett, St. Jude and the other member institutions are contributing rapidly and effectively to the understanding and cure of central nervous system tumors in children. I’m proud that the 9th District is paving the way for developing the treatments and support services for patients of these devastating ailments, and I thank HHS for recognizing these efforts.”
The PBTC includes St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Children’s National Medical Center (Washington, DC), Children's Memorial Hospital (Chicago), Duke University, National Cancer Institute, Texas Children's Cancer Center, University of California at San Francisco, and University of Pittsburgh. The PBTC was formed by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in 1999 to improve the treatment of primary brain tumors in children. The participating academic centers and children's hospitals are responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of the majority of children with primary brain tumors in the United States.
While the primary mission of the PBTC is to identify through laboratory and clinical science superior treatment strategies for children with brain cancers, the PBTC investigators recognize their profound responsibility to meet the special needs of the children and families as they face this enormous challenge. Members are committed to working within their institutions and communities to improve support services and follow up care for these patients and their families.
