Congressman Cohen Announces $833,068 for Memphis Community Health Centers

March 27, 2009

“I was very pleased to accept this award on behalf of the 12,541 supporters of the Humane Society in the 9th District,” said Congressman Cohen. “Animal rights has always been one of my highest priorities as a legislator, and I’ve worked hard in the U.S. Congress to pass laws that protect and respect animals.”

Congressman Cohen added, “The Humane Society is a venerable organization of which I am proud to call myself a member, and I hope to enlist their help again this year when I reintroduce my canned hunting bill in the House of Representatives. Canned hunts are a cruel and unsporting practice of killing tame, exotic animals within the confines of an enclosure where the animals have no chance of escape. It’s contrary to principles of fair chase, sportsmanship and common decency, and I am confident that this Congress will support my legislation.”

Congressman Cohen has received numerous honors from animal welfare groups over his career in government. While in the Tennessee Senate, he passed laws making extreme cases of animal cruelty a felony crime and mandating training in animal behavior for law enforcement officers. He received the Humane Champion Award in 2007, as well.

Every year, the Humane Society Legislative Fund compiles a federal Humane Scorecard to provide a snapshot of animal protection issues considered by the U.S. Congress and give animal advocates a tool to assess the performance of their Senators and Representatives. The Humane Scorecard lets constituents see if their legislators are taking action to help protect animals. The scorecard tracks key votes as well as co-sponsorship of important pro-animal bills and signing an annual letter seeking funds needed to enforce key animal welfare laws.
