Congressman Cohen Sworn-In for Second Term

January 6, 2009

“I look forward to my second term serving the people of Memphis and Shelby County in the House of Representatives,” said Congressman Cohen. “We face many challenges at home and abroad over the next two years, but there are many reasons to be optimistic moving forward. With a new presidential administration taking office in two weeks and a strengthened majority in the Congress that is focused on creating jobs, economic recovery, accountability, ending the war in Iraq and preserving our environment, Americans will – for the first time in a long time – get the representation they deserve in Washington.”

Congressman Cohen begins his second term representing the 9th District of Tennessee today. A seasoned and experienced legislator from his 24 years serving in the Tennessee Senate, Congressman Cohen quickly gained distinction during his freshman term, most notably as the author of a Congressional Resolution formally apologizing for the enslavement and racial segregation of African-Americans. Speaker Nancy Pelosi called him “the conscience of the freshman class,” and he received numerous accolades including the Vida Foundation's D. Emelio Castelar Work Recognition Award (an international humanitarian award presented in Madrid, Spain), “Best Memphian” in the Memphis Flyer’s “Best of Memphis" Reader's Poll and recognition as one of the “Forward 50” by The Forward, America's largest Jewish newspaper, recognizing the most influential Jewish Americans of the year.
