Statement on Earthquake in Haiti
January 14, 2010
“My thoughts continue to be with the people of Haiti who are struggling to recover from the devastating effects of the earthquake. This morning, I am pleased to report the good news that the main airport in Port-au-Prince has been reopened thanks to the efforts of the United States. This will allow humanitarian assistance that is being sent from around the world to get through to the people of Haiti.
"My staff is continuing to provide information to constituents who have loved ones in Haiti, whether they reside or are travelling there. I urge anyone who is seeking information about a loved one in Haiti to call my District Office at 544-4131 for assistance or you can visit my website at cohen.house.gov. My website also has information about how individuals can help with rescue and relief efforts and I'll continue to update that as more information becomes available.
“The people of Haiti have endured more than their share of hardships from hurricanes and storms in recent years, and the devastation left in the wake of those disasters has only added to the economic challenges facing their country. The United States has been a friend to the Haitian people, and clearly, they need our support and compassion during this difficult time.”
