What: An in-person town hall meeting to discuss the Congressman’s work for Tennessee’s 9th Congressional District, including energy costs and the GOP’s so-called “One Big Ugly Bill” that makes devastating cuts in SNAP, Medicare, Medicaid, and other lifeline programs.

WASHINGTON – Representatives Steve Cohen (TN-9) and Dina Titus (NV-1) today led a letter to Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy stressing the Congressional intent of provisions in last year’s Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization law regarding the handling of wheelchairs and other mobility devices for air travelers with mobility issues. The letter was also signed by Representatives Christopher Deluzio, Mark DeSaulnier, John Garamendi, Jared Huffman, Jesus Garcia, Pramila Jayapal, Jarold Nadler, Pat Ryan, Greg Stanton, and Frederica Wilson.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today called on Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Administrator Bryan Bedford to fully and accurately implement provisions of his Emergency Vacating of Aircraft Cabin (EVAC) Act. In the letter, Congressman Cohen urged the agency to “publicly disavow” a 2019-2020 aircraft evacuation study mandated by his earlier legislation, the SEAT Act, which relied on an unrepresentative sample of the flying public and has since been sharply discredited by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM).

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today announced that the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) will receive a grant of $77,000 from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases for a project titled “Modulating drug efflux transporter expression on the macrophage reservoir of HIV.” The research is under the direction of Associate Professor Dr. Theodore Cory in the College of Pharmacy.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today announced that Rhodes College will receive a grant of $180,000 from the National Science Foundation for a project entitled “RUI: Interrogating Catalytic Efficiency through Kinetic, Structural and Small-Molecule Guided Investigation of L-DOPA 2,3 Dioxygenases.” The research is under the direction of Professor Larryn Peterson, Chair of the Rhodes Chemistry Department.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9), a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, today introduced the Independent Acting Inspectors Generals Act aimed at insulating both permanent and acting inspectors general – appointed to investigate waste, fraud and abuse in their agencies and departments – from political interference.
President Donald Trump fired inspectors general as one of his first acts in office. Federal inspectors general were created in 1978 to establish independent oversight of federal agencies.
