Congressman Cohen Celebrates the Fourth of July

July 3, 2018

WASHINGTON – In advance of Wednesday's observance of America's 242nd birthday, Congressman Cohen (TN-09) released the following statement:

"Tomorrow, friends, family and neighbors will gather for barbecues and fireworks to celebrate our nation's independence. When our founders signed the Declaration of Independence 242 years ago, they set us on a path to liberty and freedom that has become the envy of the world.

"Through our history, that path has occasionally diverged from the ideal course and has needed corrections such as defeating the Confederacy, abolishing slavery, major constitutional amendments, school desegregation and the Voting Rights and Civil Rights Acts. Some see the need for further course corrections in our day to address vote suppression, gun violence and abuses of Presidential power.

"While we have made great progress, there is more work to do. As Americans and Memphians enjoy the holiday, I encourage reflection on the bravery and forethought of our founders, who risked their lives and fortunes on the noble experiment that keeps us working each day toward a more perfect union.

"I wish everyone a happy and safe Fourth of July."
