Congressman Cohen Commemorates Martin Luther King Day

January 21, 2019

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) commemorated the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. National Holiday Monday by participating in several Dr. King-inspired events. He also released this statement:

"On this 90th anniversary of Dr. King's birth, I approach the national holiday with both reverence for all he helped our nation achieve, and sorrow for what might have been. Dr. King helped transform our nation as a leader for Civil Rights, a Noble Peace Prize laureate, an anti-war activist, and one of our greatest Americans.

"Memphis will forever mourn his assassination while he was trying to help our striking sanitation workers. Last year's 50th anniversary of that dark day brought the whole world to Memphis and to the balcony where he fell victim.

"Today is a good day to reflect on the life of Dr. King and to read his speeches and to recall, as he said, that "the arc of the moral universe is long but it bends toward justice."
