Congressman Cohen Condemns State Legislature’s Shortsighted Tuition Decision
WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) expressed dismay that the Tennessee state Senate Education Committee failed on Wednesday to advance a bill to provide in-state tuition to students currently protected by the Deferred Action of Childhood Arrivals (DACA) programs, effectively killing the effort, and made the following statement.
“DACA recipients have already established their deep roots in our communities and are some of most motivated students. Tennessee needs talented young people to bring their skills and productivity to a variety of entrepreneurial efforts. Why would does the Roy Moore wing of the state Republican Party want to create disincentives for our talented students to continue their education in Tennessee? It doesn’t make sense.”
DACA recipients, sometimes called Dreamers, were brought to this country as children by their parents and many know no other country. Congressman Cohen is a cosponsor of The Dream Act (H.R. 3440) which would establish a formal process to allow certain individuals brought to this country as children to become legal residents.
