Congressman Cohen Recognizes Teacher Appreciation Week
WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) recognized Teacher Appreciation Week and released the following statement:
“We all have had that special teacher or teachers whose gracious intervention or encouragement helped change the trajectory of our lives. For me, it was the principal and teachers of Idlewild Elementary – Ms. Stanton, Ms. Streuli, Ms. Henderson, Ms. Stewart, Ms. Ward and Ms. Payne. I also had great and dedicated teachers in junior high, high school and college and will never forget the fine professors at the University of Memphis such as Law School Dean Robert D. Cox and the legendary torts Professor James L. Minicus.
“Teachers aren’t paid enough, as is becoming ever more clear, and national education policy under the Trump administration appears to be more focused on private profits than learning. That has to change.
“Teachers do far more than instruct students and grade papers. In fact, much of their work is preparation outside the classroom, a fact often overlooked in debates over curriculum, certification, testing and meeting national standards. I’m grateful for all our teachers and wish them well this and every week.”
