Responsibility for the worst assault since the War of 1812 must be determined

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), who was in the House Chamber when violent insurrectionists assaulted the U.S. Capitol on January 6, today voted to create a Select Committee on the events of that day.

The vote on passage was 222 to 190.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

“The attack on our democracy by right-wing thugs and Trump supporters in an effort to disrupt the certification of Joe Biden’s election as President must be fully understood if we are to prevent any future such incident. The American people need to know why it happened and who was responsible. We take an oath to defend the Constitution, not a president or any other person. This was an attack on the Constitution. While an independent commission would have been preferable, partisan obstruction requires that we take this route for an issue that should be bipartisan. I look forward to following the Committee’s progress and to reading its report and recommendations.”
