Congressman Cohen Votes to Extend the Debt Ceiling and Avert a Catastrophic Debt Default

September 29, 2021

Says full faith and credit of the U.S. should not be a partisan issue

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) tonight voted for, and the House passed, a suspension of the nation's debt ceiling through December 2022, assuring the full faith and credit of the United States and preventing a Republican-caused economic crisis.

The vote on passage was 219 to 212.

After the vote, Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

"This used to be a bipartisan exercise to protect the ‘full faith and credit of the United States' and maintain our sterling reputation for meeting our obligations. Passing it is the responsible thing to do, but Leader McConnell and Senate Republicans continue a reckless political game of blocking our every effort to avert the first-ever debt default, no matter who gets hurt."
