Cohen Statement on Affordable Care Act Marketplace Enrollment Reaching 8 Million Americans

April 17, 2014

[MEMPHIS, TN] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today released the following statement after President Barack Obama announced that 8 million Americans have enrolled in private health care coverage through the Affordable Care Act’s health insurance marketplaces:

“With 8 million Americans now enrolled in private health coverage through the Affordable Care Act’s marketplaces, it is clearer than ever that the President’s landmark health care reform law is achieving its goal of making high-quality, affordable health coverage a right, not just a privilege. Thanks to the law, insurance companies can no longer discriminate against women or those with pre-existing conditions, young adults can stay on their parent’s insurance until they are 26, and our seniors are saving money on their prescriptions.”

“While the law is working and Memphians are seeing many of the law’s benefits, thousands of Tennesseans are without coverage because of Govornor Haslam’s refusal to expand Medicaid. It is time for Republican leaders to put the political brinksmanship behind them and stop blocking the law’s benefits and end their attempts to take the law’s protections away from the American people.”
