Congressman Cohen Announces Half-Million Dollar GrantfFor Children's Health Fund in Tennessee

March 24, 2008

“I am pleased that the FTA has apportioned these moneys for the Child Health Transportation Initiative,” said Congressman Cohen. “The lack of access to reliable transportation is one of the biggest barriers for effective health care for children in our country. These funds will finance studies and important programs in Memphis and Nashville that will improve access to transportation for children so that they do not miss opportunities immunizations and routine check-ups. Increased access to reliable transportation also has the added benefit of cutting down on the use of emergency rooms for non-emergencies.”

The grant will fund pilot programs to improve child health care transportation in Memphis and Nashville and will study their effectiveness for additional programs for reducing transportation barriers at the community level and in Mississippi, Arkansas and Louisiana. The Memphis and Nashville programs will serve as field-test sites for CHF’s Transportation and Referral Management systems, and the Child Health Transportation Initiative will host two national conferences in Memphis to share experiences of pilot sites and to assist new pilot sites in planning and development of project ideas.
