Celebrating COGIC Bishop Brandon Porter's 50 Years of Ministry
Dear Friend,
This week, while working in the District, I celebrated the 50th anniversary of the ministry of COGIC Bishop Brandon Porter. I also invited smart students to apply for the Congressional App Challenge, and offered a Friday Flashback, a Bill Day cartoon, and a weekly health tip (including that Medicare open enrollment started Thursday and ends December 7). Keep reading and follow me on Bluesky, Facebook, and Instagram to see what I am doing as it happens.

Celebrating COGIC Bishop Brandon Porter’s 50 Years of Ministry

Last Saturday, I celebrated the 50 years of ministry that Church of God in Christ (COGIC) Bishop Brandon Porter of Greater Community Temple has served. The Reverend Brandon, a fourth generation COGIC leader, is the author of acclaimed books such as A Reason to Keep Going and presides over a congregation of more than 5,000 souls. I congratulated him and his wife Melody on their transformative efforts and wished them well as they continue serving the people.
Inviting Students to Register for the Congressional App Challenge

Registration for the prestigious Congressional App Challenge is now under way with a Thursday, October 30 at 11 a.m. Central Time, deadline. The computer science coding competition for middle and high school students has grown exponentially since its inception in 2013. Students living in or going to school in Tennessee’s 9th Congressional District are eligible and can use any platform or programming language. Winners will be invited to the U.S. Capitol to demonstrate their projects in Spring 2026. See details and register here.

This is me with Cybill Shepherd on August 5, 2012, as she made her Broadway debut in Gore Vidal’s “The Best Man.”

Medicare open enrollment started Thursday and ends December 7. If you need to update your coverage or look at your status, check here.
Also, it’s fairly well-established that being active is good for your health. Let me suggest taking a stroll, if you’re inclined. See the benefits of walking here. Experts tell me that walking before a meal can help with weight management and walking after a meal can help with managing blood sugar and insulin.

“As nightfall does not come all at once, neither does oppression. In both instances, there is a twilight when everything remains seemingly unchanged. And it is in such twilight that we all must be most aware of change in the air — however slight — lest we become unwitting victims of the darkness.” – Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas (1898 – 1980), born on this day
As always, I remain
Sincerely,
