Dear Friend – This week, Jimmy Carter, a fine president and a good man, passed away at the age of 100, and I reflected on the Carter presidency and his inspired post-White House diplomacy and charity work. I also returned to Washington to be sworn in for a tenth term in Congress, showcased my legislative and other highlights of 2024, condemned the violent rampage in New Orleans and the explosion in Las Vegas on New Year’s morning, reintroduced the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) Salary Transparency Act, introduced legislation promoting democracy in the country of Georgia, and shared a Bill Day cartoon, a memorable “Friday Flashback” and a weekly health tip. Keep reading and follow me on Bluesky, Twitter (X), Facebook and Instagram to see what I am doing as it happens. Remembering Jimmy Carter
Congressman Cohen took this picture as he watched Jimmy Carter greet all the passengers on the plane. Jimmy Carter was one of the most honest and moral presidents with a admirable and impressive post-presidency. From his eco-friendly policies and the Camp David Accords to a Nobel Peace Prize and his work with Habitat for Humanity, including houses he helped build in Memphis, his character and integrity were unmatched. It is a delight to see the tributes flowing in. I’ll never forget seeing him on a flight from Atlanta to Washington, D.C., as he shook hands with every passenger. He was a marvelous human being, and we are fortunate he served with such honor, grace, and distinction. Being Sworn In to the 119th Congress
Earlier today, I was sworn in for my tenth term representing Tennessee’s 9th Congressional District. This 119th Congress promises to be chaotic and eventful, but I am committed to advancing the interests of my constituents. As your Representative, I will continue my work protecting our cherished rights and improving the lives of everyone in Tennessee’s 9th District. I am here to fight for you and I thank you for giving me the privilege to serve. Highlighting 2024 Legislative Accomplishments
During the holidays, I shared some of my significant legislative and other achievements in 2024. From helping secure the largest federal infrastructure project in Tennessee’s history – a new Interstate 55 bridge over the Mississippi at Memphis – to promoting civil rights and health care reform, 2024 was a good year for the people of the 9th District and the broader Mid-South region. See my full legislative update here. Condemning the Attacks in New Orleans and Las Vegas We are still learning details about the New Year’s Day predawn havoc and loss of life on Bourbon Street in New Orleans and the explosion at Trump Hotel in Las Vegas. Whatever the motivation, such acts of violence must be condemned. Reintroducing the TVA Salary Transparency Act
Earlier today, I was joined by Congressman Tim Burchett of Tennessee’s 2nd Congressional District in re-introducing the bipartisan Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) Salary Transparency Act. The measure restores a disclosure requirement for certain TVA executives and will help assure public trust in our nation’s largest federal power provider. See our release on the measure here. Promoting Democracy in Georgia
Also earlier today, I met with a small group of foreign policy reporters to discuss reintroducing the bipartisan Mobilizing and Enhancing the country of Georgia’s Options for Building Accountability, Resilience, and Independence Act, or MEGOBARI Act, with lead cosponsor Joe Wilson of South Carolina. We need to do all we can to keep Georgia focused on strengthening its democracy and its orientation to the West. The Friday Flashback
I met with Jimmy Carter when he came to the former Davis-Kidd Booksellers (now Novel) for a book signing. He signed this picture “Best wishes to Steve Cohen – Jimmy Carter.” The Bill Day Cartoon
“Trump Owned by Musk” Weekly Health Tip With temperatures predicted to drop into the 20s and 30s in the days ahead, it’s a good idea to be prepared for the cold to avoid injuries and accidents. Wear layers, waterproof your shoes or boots and have a hat handy. See more guidance about the cold from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention here. It’s also important to protect your pets as temperatures drop. See some useful guidance from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) here. Quote of the Week “His life’s commitment to humility, kindness and service to others will continue to be a North star for future generations of public servants. President Carter will be deeply missed by all, though we can be heartened that he and his beloved Rosalynn are once again reunited. May their lifelong love and faith be a small comfort to President Carter’s family and all those who loved him.” – Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries on the passing of Jimmy Carter As always, I remain. Most sincerely,
