Enewsletters

Dear Friend,

This week, I was re-elected to my tenth term representing Tennessee’s 9th Congressional District and look forward to continuing to represent you in Washington. I also recognized the service and sacrifice of the veterans we will celebrate on Veterans Day this Monday; visited the Carpenter Art Garden in Binghampton; announced a research grant for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital; reminded those eligible to review, enroll in or change coverage under Medicare during the current open-enrollment period; offered 2025 U.S. Capitol Historical Society calendars; and recommended some election-related and seasonal health tips. Keep reading and follow me on Twitter (X), Facebook, and Instagram to see what I am doing as it happens.

Thanking Constituents for Another Term

Representing Tennessee’s 9th Congressional District in Washington is a great honor. I thank all who voted in Shelby and Tipton counties to re-elect me to a tenth two-year term in the U.S. House of Representatives. We have some challenging days ahead, but as the most senior member of the Tennessee Congressional delegation, and its only Democrat, I assure you that my work representing you will be effective and that I will never stop fighting for you and your families. Please don’t hesitate to contact me for help related to federal benefits or to make your views known on issues you care about. Thank you once again for allowing me the opportunity to serve you.

Recognizing the Service and Sacrifice of Our Veterans

Monday is Veterans Day, an opportunity to thank all of our military veterans and their families for their service and sacrifice in defending our country.  I continue to work to assure they receive the benefits of their service and make sure they – and active-duty service members – are not scammed by con artists and others seeking to take advantage of them. I am proud that our own Lieutenant Colonel Luke Weathers Junior VA Medical Center in Memphis continues to improve its service and outreach. I frequently discuss its patients’ needs with senior staff members there. Thank you again for your service.

Visiting Carpenter Art Garden in Binghampton

On Thursday, I visited the Carpenter Art Garden in Binghampton, the recent recipient of a prestigious National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) grant for a mural and art installation, to see its latest innovations. In September 2023, I toured the Carpenter Art Garden to celebrate the $400,000 in community project funding I secured during the appropriations process, some of which went to support paid internships at the Art Garden. Seeing this neighborhood transformed through the dedication and hard work of its residents – and its artists – is inspiring.

Announcing Research Grant to St. Jude

On Monday, I announced a substantial grant from one of our National Institutes of Health to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for the study of T cells. See details in my release here.

Reminding Everyone that Medicare Open Enrollment is Underway

Medicare Open Enrollment started last month. It’s your opportunity to review or change your prescription drug and health coverage for next year. Review your 2025 options to see if there is a better fit for your needs and budget. Open enrollment runs through December 7, 2024.

You have two main ways to get your Medicare coverage — Original Medicare or Medicare Advantage (Medicare-approved plans from for-profit private companies). It’s important to understand the differences between these two options, so consider these things when choosing coverage.

Start at Medicare.gov, your official source to find the type of coverage that fits you best. If you need more help comparing options:

Beginning in 2025, there will be a $2,000 out-of-pocket cap on prescription drugs for the year, thanks to President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act, which I voted for. If you expect to reach this limit, you might consider signing up for Medicare’s new Prescription Payment Plan, which allows you to pay for your drug plan monthly instead of paying your pharmacy when you pick up your prescriptions.

My office currently has a limited number of 2025 U.S. Capitol Historical Society calendars available. If you would like to receive a calendar, please complete this form. Due to the rules of the House, I am only able to mail calendars to residents of Tennessee’s 9th District. Please feel free to share this email with other residents of the 9th District who may be interested in receiving one but who do not currently receive my eNewsletter.

“The important thing is don’t ever give up. Don't ever give up. Don’t ever stop trying to make the world a better place. You have power.” – Vice President Kamala Harris in a concession speech at Howard University on Wednesday
