Urging TVA to Commit to Renewable Energy

August 18, 2023
Enewsletters

Dear Friend,

This week, I joined Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey in a letter to Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) leaders urging them to commit to clean and renewable energy sources by 2035. I also congratulated Epicenter (Vibrant) Memphis for winning one of just 24 Commerce Department Capital Readiness Program grants and welcomed the Under Secretary for Minority Business Development to Memphis; announced a more than $1 million grant to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital; welcomed the fourth indictment this year for Donald Trump; and offered some Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance on general health maintenance. Keep reading and follow me on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram (and soon on Threads) to see what I am doing as it happens.

Urging TVA to Commit to Renewable Energy

On Wednesday, Senator Ed Markey of Massachusetts and I led a letter with some of our colleagues to the Tennessee Valley Authority’s Board Chairman William Kilbride and its President and CEO Jeffrey J. Lyash urging them chart a path to 100 percent clean, renewable sources of energy by 2035. This would benefit ratepayers, the health of residents of the valley, and the climate. See my release and the letter here.

Congratulating Epicenter (Vibrant) Memphis

9th Congressional District Deputy Director Hank Henry at Wednesday's announcement

Also Wednesday, I was pleased that the Under Secretary of Commerce for Minority Business Development, Donald R. Cravins Jr., came to Memphis to congratulate Epicenter (Vibrant) Memphis on being chosen to receive a Capital Readiness Program award.  The Program is funded by the American Rescue Plan which only I and former Congressman Jim Cooper in the Tennessee congressional delegation supported. The exact award amount will be announced later in September, but the funding will help Epicenter in its efforts to grow the local economy through outreach to minority entrepreneurs. I also secured Fiscal Year 2023 Community Project Funding for the Vibrant Memphis 901 entrepreneurs program to support local entrepreneurs and small businesses. A scheduling conflict prevented my meeting with the Under Secretary but my Deputy District Director and Digital Communications Director represented the 9th Congressional District. I congratulate Vibrant Memphis for being awarded one of just 24 of these grants nationwide.

Announcing $1 Million Research Grant to St. Jude

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital will receive a grant of $1,090,000 from the National Cancer Institute for research leading to improved outcomes for high-risk acute leukemia. See my release here.

Welcoming Fourth Trump Indictment

Donald Trump has been indicted for the fourth time, this time in Georgia, where he is accused of racketeering with others to overturn the election results in that state. The evidence, including Trump’s recorded statement asking the Secretary of State to “find” enough votes to assure his victory, appears overwhelming. Despite all his legal and ethical problems, Trump inexplicably remains the frontrunner among likely Republican primary voters. See my statement on the fourth Trump indictment here.

Weekly Health Tip

Now that school-age children are back in their classrooms, it’s a good idea for parents and grandparents to evaluate their own health with scheduled checkups, needed vaccinations (shingles, for example), screenings and dentist visits to assure optimal physical, mental, and emotional well-being. See some useful guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention here.

Quote of the Week

“In one instance, Donald Trump stated to the Acting United States Attorney General, ‘Just say that the election was corrupt, and leave the rest to me and the Republican congressmen.’” – From Monday’s Fulton County, Georgia, Grand Jury indictment in State of Georgia v. Donald John Trump et al.

As always, I remain.
Most sincerely,

Steve Cohen
