$11.4 Million in Disaster Relief Headed to Memphis Thanks to Congressman Cohen’s Efforts
WASHINGTON, DC — Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) announced today that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded $11,423,826 to Memphis Light, Gas, and Water (MLGW) to support the repair and restoration of the city’s electrical power distribution facilities that sustained damages following a severe band of storms in June 2023. The new federal grant award represents 75% of the anticipated total cost of the project.
"I encouraged Governor Lee to seek a Federal Disaster Declaration from President Biden immediately following the severe storms that hit Memphis in late June of 2023, and I’m pleased to see that effort continuing to pay off for Memphis and TN-9," said Congressman Cohen. "This disaster relief will ensure that thousands of people and families in our district have a reliable power supply and will bolster our infrastructure, so we’re better prepared for future emergencies and disruptions."
Congressman Cohen requested federal assistance from FEMA to address MLGW’s issues that were created by the multi-day storm in late June of 2023, which left thousands of residents without electrical power and caused structural damages to various MLGW facilities. According to MLGW, it was the 6th worst storm in Memphis history.
This significant investment underscores the federal commitment to enhancing infrastructure resilience and ensuring reliable power supply to the citizens of Memphis. The funds will be instrumental in repairing damage and upgrading the electrical grid, strengthening the community’s ability to withstand future emergencies and disruptions.
