Citing Longstanding Concern Over Trump’s Fitness to Serve, Congressman Cohen Supports Second Impeachment Effort

Introduced first Articles of Impeachment on November 15, 2017

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), Chairman of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties, today expressed strong support for the Article of Impeachment that will go to a vote in the House on Wednesday, and made the following statement:

"It didn't take 20-20 vision to see that Trump was a threat to this country. That's why I introduced five articles of impeachment against him in November 2017, long before most of my colleagues would join me. It now seems everyone can see the danger that I saw more than 1,130 days ago. Of course I support this second effort to impeach this lawless tyrant. As was clear to me long ago, Trump continually puts our democracy in jeopardy and he has to go."

Congressman Cohen introduced H. Res. 621, five Articles of Impeachment, on November 15, 2017, joined by Representatives Luis Gutierrez of Illinois, Al Green of Texas, Marcia Fudge of Ohio, Adriano Espaillat of New York and John Yarmuth of Kentucky. See the press conference at which they were introduced here and Congressman Cohen's press release on that occasion here.

The Articles of Impeachment that resulted in Donald Trump's eventual impeachment were introduced by Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler on December 10, 2019.
