Cohen Announces $2.4 Million Federal Grant for Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority

September 13, 2016

Grant supports clean air and airport emissions reduction initiatives at Memphis International Airport

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority received a $2,446,731 federal grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Voluntary Airport Low Emissions (VALE) Program to support clean air and airport emissions reduction initiatives at Memphis International Airport.

“As the Fed-Ex ‘Super Hub,’ Memphis International Airport is the second busiest cargo airport in the world,” said Congressman Cohen. “This federal funding will help ensure that the airport can continue serving travelers comfortably and cargo efficiently while protecting our environment for Memphians who live nearby.”

Memphis International Airport is a world-class facility serving more than 6 million passengers each year. Dedicated in 1929 as the Memphis Municipal Airport with just two major carriers, the airport now hosts several national carriers as well as the FedEx “Super Hub.” Memphis International has grown into the busiest cargo airport in the country, and is the second-busiest in the world—behind only Hong Kong.
