Cohen Asks DOJ to Look into Reported Computer Glitches at Shelby County Jail and Courts

November 15, 2016

[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch requesting that the U.S. Department of Justice look into reports of computer glitches at the Shelby County Jail and courts in Tennessee that have caused individuals who have posted bail to remain stuck in jail. A copy of Congressman Cohen’s letter can be found here.

“If true, these reports are deeply concerning,” said Congressman Cohen in his letter. “No one should spend one additional minute, let alone days, in jail when, under law, they are supposed to be free. As the Memphis Commercial Appeal so aptly put it, justice delayed is justice denied. I respectfully request that the Department of Justice look into this problem to ensure that civil rights are protected.”
