July 18, 2016

[MEMPHIS, TN] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that Girls Inc. of Memphis received a $372,960.00 federal Talent Search grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The grant will be used to strengthen the organization’s Education Talent Search (ETS) program which helps low-income, first-generation college bound students in grades 9-12 develop an awareness for the importance of postsecondary education.

“Afterschool programs, such as Girls Inc. of Memphis, are vital to the education and safety of our children,” said Congressman Cohen. “This new federal funding for the Education Talent Search program will help keep our children off the streets and better prepare them for life after high school.”

For more than 60 years, Girls Inc. of Memphis has offered a variety of programs designed to build girls’ capacity for college preparedness. Their mission is to provide a vision of confidence and self-sufficiency, to provide the means for making that vision a reality for girls, and to inspire all girls to become smart, strong and bold. Since opening in 1946, Girls Inc. has motivated thousands of girls in and around the city of Memphis to pursue postsecondary education.
