Cohen Hails House Passage of National Urban Search and Rescue Response Systems Act

December 8, 2016

[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen, a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, hailed passage by the House of Representatives of the National Urban Search and Rescue Response System Act of 2016 (S.2971). The bill was previously approved by the Senate and will now head to the President’s desk. This bill would authorize the National Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) program and codify protections for USAR team members, such as workers’ compensation and liability protections. 28 USAR teams are strategically located across the United States and provide timely response when needed in the aftermath of a disaster. Congressman Cohen spoke in support of this bill on the House floor. You can watch his remarks here.

“I am pleased both the House and Senate have now passed the National Urban Search and Rescue Response Systems Act,” said Congressman Cohen. “I first introduced a bill to codify the Urban Search and Rescue Response System in 2007. These specialized teams of police officers, firefighters, emergency medical personnel and other first responders provide search and rescue services and swift rapid rescue, among other activities, after disaster strikes. The dedication of the Tennessee Task Force One, based in Memphis, and USARs around the country are truly commendable as they drop everything in their busy daily lives to come to the prompt assistance of others when needed. I urge my colleagues to provide the necessary funding to support USARs and their heroic, life-saving activities.”
