Cohen: Memphis International Airport Receives $12.3 Million Airport Improvement Program Grant

July 21, 2016

[MEMPHIS, TN] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that Memphis International Airport received a $12,395,583 Airport Improvement Program grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation for the modernization of Concourse B, improvement of the access road and security enhancements.

“Memphis International Airport is a critically important transportation link in the Mid-South region,” said Congressman Cohen. “This funding will help the airport continue to make upgrades to serve travelers safely and efficiently for many years to come.”

The Airport Improvement Program grant will fund the following at Memphis International Airport:

  • The initial design phase for modernization of the terminal Concourse B after the elimination of Delta Airlines as a hub
  • Various security enhancements required by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA)
  • The rehabilitation of 300 feet of pavement to improve the existing commercial access road to the airport

Memphis International Airport is a world-class facility that today serves nearly 4 million passengers per year. Dedicated in 1929 as the Memphis Municipal Airport with just two major carriers, the airport now hosts several national carriers as well as the FedEx “Super Hub.” Memphis International has grown into the busiest cargo airport in the country, and is the second-busiest in the world —behind only Hong Kong.
