Cohen’s Statement on the Passing of Former Israeli President Shimon Peres

September 28, 2016

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today released the following statement on the passing of former Israeli Prime Minister, President and Nobel laureate Shimon Peres:

“I am deeply saddened by the death of Shimon Peres,” said Congressman Cohen. “Mr. Peres and I met on several occasions and he’s one of the most impressive people I’ve ever encountered. He was Prime Minister of Israel, President of Israel, and held an array of other positions within the Israeli government. He was also awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994 for his role in negotiating the Oslo Accords peace agreement. As Defense Minister, Mr. Peres played an integral role in the hostage rescue mission carried out by the IDF in Uganda in 1976 known as Operation Entebbe. My thoughts go out to Mr. Peres, his family and the entire country. A giant has fallen in Israel.”
