Cohen’s Statement on President Trump’s Decision to End Vital Subsidy Payments Under the ACA

October 13, 2017

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] — Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today released the following statement after President Trump's decision to end Cost-Sharing Reduction payments required under the Affordable Care Act to make health insurance coverage affordable for millions of Americans:

"President Trump's decision to end subsidy payments for low- and middle-income Affordable Care Act participants is mean-spirited and could be devastating to many Ninth District residents," said Congressman Cohen. "These subsidies make health insurance coverage affordable for millions of Americans, including more than 155,000 Tennessee residents who receive an average of more than $1,200 annually through the ACA. President Trump and many Republicans have refused to work with Democrats to improve the ACA, and have instead done everything in their power to try to dismantle and sabotage the law. I, and many of my Democratic colleagues, believe that affordable health care should be a right, not a privilege, and we will continue to work to preserve and improve the ACA to ensure health insurance remains affordable."
