Congressman Celebrates 53rd Anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid

Press Release
Millions lead healthier lives because of action taken by Congress and LBJ

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) marked the 53rd anniversaries of the Medicare and Medicaid programs that President Lyndon Johnson signed into law on this date in 1965, and made the following statement:

“Medicare and Medicaid have helped millions of Americans lead healthier lives. These programs that were once deemed controversial are now mainstream and accepted as essential to the wellbeing of those who are eligible. As an advocate of Medicare for All, I know the safety net programs can be expanded and improved but, especially on this anniversary, I stand with those who want to make Medicare and Medicaid stronger and better and against proposals, like those advocated by House Speaker Paul Ryan, that would slash federal funding for these lifesaving programs.”
