Congressman Cohen Speaks on Pro-Democracy and Anti-War Movements in Russia at the United States Institute of Peace Headquarters

WASHINGTON -- Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today attended and spoke at the Washington Dialogue, a historic forum at the U.S. Institute of Peace Headquarters. The Washington Dialogue highlighted Russian voices that oppose Putin’s war. In a room with nearly 100 civil society leaders and organizations exiled from Russia for their agenda of peace and democracy, Congressman Cohen condemned Putin’s Russia for its unlawful detention of political prisoners, including Russian political activist and journalist Vladimir Kara-Murza and demonstrated his unwavering support for Ukraine. Vladimir Kara-Murza is currently serving a 25-year sentence for high treason.

Former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine William Taylor and the wife of Vladimir Kara-Murza, Evgenia, were in attendance with Congressman Cohen.

“I developed a friendship with Vladimir Kara-Murza,” said Congressman Cohen. “He said the worst thing for a political prisoner is to be forgotten. Today’s event is important in remembering and freeing all the unlawfully detained in Russia.”

Congressman Cohen was named the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe Parliamentary Assembly’s Special Representative on Political Prisoners in July 2022.
