Congressman Cohen Again Votes Against Impeaching Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas

February 13, 2024

A pointless duplication of last week’s unwarranted posturing

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9), a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, voted again tonight against sham articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Last week, Congressman Cohen voted against the same partisan measure which failed by a single vote.

The vote tonight was 214 to 213, and the measure was adopted.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement prior to the vote:

“The House under Speaker Johnson is wasting a lot of time sending messages in aid of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign but isn’t doing much to advance the needs and interests of the American people. I voted against this illegitimate use of the impeachment power once again because even its most ardent advocates can’t point to any evidence Mayorkas, a learned and dedicated public servant carrying out a complicated range of duties, has engaged in an impeachable offense. Using impeachment to score points in partisan policy debates trivializes impeachment and undermines public faith in Congress to take its obligations seriously.”

Mayorkas, a lawyer and former federal prosecutor, is the seventh Homeland Security Secretary and previously served as Deputy Secretary (2013 – 2016) and as the Department’s Director of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (2009 – 2013). A native of Cuba, he is the first refugee and the first person born in Latin America to lead the Department.
