August 29, 2023

Funding for Memphis STEM-M Ambassadors and sickle cell disease research

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today announced two grants, totaling $1,446,200, to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The first, for $263,200, is for Memphis STEM-M Ambassadors education and outreach program, from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences. The second, for $1,183,000, is for gene editing research involving sickle cell disease, from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

“I am pleased to see the National Institutes of Health investing in St. Jude’s ongoing research and educational initiatives. Working to find therapeutic solutions for sickle cell disease is critical in saving lives, especially in Memphis and the Mid-South where we have a disproportionate share of people with the disease. St. Jude’s STEM-M Ambassadors program aims to diversify the future biomedical workforce. This funding will strengthen those efforts.”
