Expanded passenger screening checkpoint queuing area, seismic retrofit included in plans

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), the ranking member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Aviation Subcommittee, today announced that Memphis International Airport will receive a $14.8 million investment from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to modernize its 60-year-old terminal facilities and ensure modern day code compliance. The phased terminal development projects would ensure seismic resiliency and enhance ADA access.

This grant is being awarded from the Airport Terminal Program, which was created by the  bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act that only Congressman Cohen and former Congressman Jim Cooper supported among members of Tennessee’s Congressional delegation.

The FAA is also investing $1 million in the Charles W. Baker Airport in Millington to construct a new general aviation terminal building meeting modern Americans with Disabilities Act and seismic standards.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

“Continued major investments in Memphis International Airport will pay dividends for our regional economy for decades, creating good-paying jobs and improving passengers’ experience of traveling to and from Memphis. The modernization contemplated in these improvements will make ticketing more efficient and travelers more comfortable awaiting security screening, while improving fire safety and making needed seismic retrofits. The new terminal at Charles W. Baker will greatly improve our general aviation capacity. These are big investments in the whole Memphis community and I’m proud to have advocated for and supported this funding. Memphis and Shelby County airport officials should be commended for their leadership.”

Memphis and Shelby County Airport Authority President and CEO Scott Brockman made the following statement:

“This funding will help us continue to reinvent Memphis International Airport by starting the modernization of the ticketing and baggage areas. We are grateful to the FAA for this award, and we thank all of our members of Congress, especially Congressman Cohen, for their ongoing support of MEM, its passengers and its employees.”

The funding the FAA announced today is in addition to the $174 million the FAA has invested in recent years for a major deicing facility whose grand opening in November was attended by Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
