Congressman Cohen Announces $1.7 Million Ryan White HIV Grant to Shelby County

March 20, 2023

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that Shelby County will receive a $1,777,632 for its Ryan White HIV/AIDS programs.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

“The Ryan White programs administered by Shelby County have saved lives and continue to improve health outcomes. This funding is critical to support the health of more than 6,200 people living with HIV in Shelby County. Governor Lee has expressed an intent to reject federal HIV testing funding that goes through the State Department of Health.”

The Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program provides a comprehensive system of care that includes primary medical care and essential support services for people living with HIV who are uninsured or underinsured. The Program works with cities, states, and local community-based organizations to provide HIV care and treatment services to more than half a million people each year.

The grant program is named for Ryan White, an Indiana teenager and hemophiliac who contracted AIDS from infected blood. He died in 1990.
