Congressman Cohen Announces $2.3 Million National Science Foundation Grant to St. Jude

Underwriting research on the ecology of avian influenza

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today announced that St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital will receive a grant of $2,340,000 from the National Science Foundation for a research project entitled “US-UK-China Collab: Understanding the Impact of Poultry Vaccination on H5Nx Avian Influenza Virus Evolution and Ecosystem Dynamics.” The research is under the direction of principal investigator Richard Webby and co-principal investigators Justin Bahl and Nicolas Wu.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

“I congratulate St. Jude and its scientists researching avian influenza, a major cause of illness and economic dislocation in recent years, for receiving this prestigious National Science Foundation support. This kind of work, in collaboration with scientists in other countries, demonstrates the worldwide reach of St. Jude, and I commend it for its continued efforts to save lives.”
