Department of Homeland Security seeks to raise awareness about and prevent violent extremism

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today announced that Memphis-based Parents for Peace, a non-governmental public health nonprofit organization helping families address violence and extremism, will receive an $832,000 grant from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The department announced the award of 34 grants nationwide, totaling $20 million, through the Targeted Violence and Terrorism Prevention (TVTP) Grant Program.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

“Parents and other close family members are often some of the first to see the signs when a loved one begins to descend into violent extremism.  This grant funding to the inspiring group Families for Peace will help with training, outreach tools, and other interventions to help individuals shift away from violent extremist ideas.”
