Congressman Cohen Announces Additional $3.7 Million Tourism Development Grant for Memphis Riverfront

Supports construction of the Tailout Trail in Tom Lee Park
WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that the Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration (EDA) will invest $3,731,439 for the construction of the Tailout Trail along the Mississippi River waterfront in Tom Lee Park. The grant will go to the Riverfront Development Corporation and the City of Memphis.
Congressman Cohen made the following statement:
"This significant funding will accelerate the already-impressive transformation of our downtown riverfront, enhanced when I was able to announce this Spring a $3 million appropriation to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for improvements to Tom Lee Park. Combined with private and other government investments, this EDA grant funding to the Riverfront Development Corporation for the Tailout Trail project will unite our city and will make the trail the kind of iconic park feature that will attract tourists and residents alike."
In its announcement, the EDA described the project and its impact: "The Tailout Trail will be one-of-a-kind, inviting visitors up and (during high water) over river habitat for spectacular views of the Mississippi, the Arkansas floodplain and the more than 325 bird species. The project will draw national attention and support to Memphis and is expected to bring thousands of new visitors to the riverfront. These visitors will have a significant impact on nearby restaurants, music venues and hotels. Once completed, the Tailout Trail will be a major focal point for eco-tourism in Memphis, spawning new small businesses associated with river touring, biking, and hiking, which will help increase employment opportunities, spur private investment, and advance economic resiliency throughout the region."
