Congressman Cohen Announces FEMA Grant of $12.1 Million to MLGW in the Wake of February 2022 Severe Winter Storm

State of Tennessee to reimburse the utility
WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will provide the State of Tennessee $12,160,651 for costs incurred by the Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division after the severe winter storm of February 3-4 last year. This public assistance is authorized under Section 406 of the Robert T. Stafford Act. The state is expected to reimburse the utility for repairs to transmission lines and distribution facilities and the replacement of 119 wooden utility poles and 89 transformers.
Congressman Cohen made the following statement:
“It was important for MLGW to work swiftly to restore power after the storm to assure the health and safety of our residents. I am pleased to see FEMA reimbursing our utility for the costs it incurred in getting us back to normal conditions.”
Following the storm, Congressman Cohen wrote to Governor Lee asking that he formally request FEMA assistance to affected areas. President Biden granted a Major Disaster Declaration on March 11.
